Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

5.0

A spectacular work of investigative journalism. Reporter Ronan Farrow (estranged son of director Woody Allen) dives deep into the throes of the networks of corruption and power that wealthy men in the entertainment industry have woven. This book focuses primarily on Harvey Weinstein and the work that led up to his exposure as a serial abuser of women in Hollywood, but Farrow also touches on men like Matt Lauer and Donald Trump.

It’s crazy to read about the scope and reach of Weinstein’s power and how everyone in the industry knew what he was but were too afraid to speak out against him. Not only that, but the multiple women that did speak out were silenced with money or intimidation. While reading there were many times where I was in disbelief that stuff like this actually happened in real life—things like spies from foreign countries, crooked and backstabbing lawyers, whole corporations, including every single employee, controlled by select few men at the top. You can tell exactly how much work Farrow put into reporting and uncovering the truth. He was so persistent in getting only the facts, backed by concrete evidence and multiple sources. He cared about the actual issues and the actual women who were survivors of the abuse and harassment. This book made me so angry, but it was gratifying to see at least one of these repugnant men brought to justice.
