The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

3.0

the last several chapters are carrying these 3 stars on their own because the rest of this book was incredibly slow. the first 50% was essentially storytime world-building in the desert and as enthralled as i was by the world this was set in, there came a point where i was like, "when are they getting to that damn city?"

i also couldn't buy into the insta-lovey romance and i found myself thinking that two of the other minor characters had a lot more chemistry than whatever was going on between nahri and dara (and i was right, thank you very much).

pacing and romance aside, i loved how rich the lore and politics were. I've heard that the next two books are a lot better so i'm holding out hope because the ending was really good.
