I gave it one star simply because I did not like how the story went.

I always remembered from Pride and Prejudice that Jane and Lizzy had treated Mary well, even though Kitty and Lydia didn't. However, in the novel it seemed all four sisters treated her badly.

Plus, she was described as plain which in itself does not necessarily mean ugly. I have seen plain women and they weren't ugly to look at. So, having Mary so obsessed with how people see her seems weird to me. more because in Pride and Prejudice, Mary was simply described as plain, yet no one ever acted like she was so ugly that they couldn't bear to see her face.

Then later in the novel, Mary decides to have premarital sex with a lover? It was too out of character for her (in my opinion),and also, the fact Mary and her sisters were taught to wait until marriage to engage in sex.

Even Lydia knew she was wrong but the difference between Mary and Lydia was the fact Lydia didn't care that she broke society's rules on sex and marriage. Mary cared about following rules.

Then on top of that, Katherine J Chen decides to make Mr. Darcy betray Lizzy by falling for Mary. As well as having Lizzy decide for herself that they were only going to be married only in name.

That to me is out of character as well. We all knew in Pride and Prejudice that Lizzy would never marry someone without being absolutely certain that she could give herself completely to a man in marriage if she didn't love him first.

If I never read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen or watch any of the movies, I would say the novel was well written with a good plot. So I would give it 3 stars for a well written story.

Whoa, I normally don't like giving critique on novels, but Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. If anyone tries to alter the characters from my favorite books, I feel protective of characters, as if they were my real friends. As if I am called upon to defend their honor from authors.
