Anne McCaffrey truly was a master of world-building. While not too much happened in this book plot-wise, there was plenty to learn about Pern and its inhabitants. It has the feeling of simply existing in this world and observing what happens as the big players make moves and work to push their objectives, which is really cool, but results in a quite slow pace. A great mixture of sci-fi elements, politics, adventure, and a bit of romance, this book was a great experience. I love being in this world. There were some really tense moments, and some really tragic ones, but I really enjoyed the amount of discovery in this one: the awe of finding a new (well, old and forgotten) tool, the joy of exploring old passageways and finding traces of history, and the tension of pushing boundaries and changing Pern forever.
