The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
5.0
this book was a real surprise to me. it is a retelling of a portion of the Bible, focusing on Dinah who is the only daughter of Jacob. (please note none of this review is attempting to slander Christianity in any way. i was raised Catholic and have a lot of Christian teachings from my youth, but have developed my own spiritual following that i wouldn’t necessarily place into a box, so take this entire review with a grain of salt.)
i thought the writing in this was fantastic and following a woman’s perspective was something unheard of in the Bible. the shift in focus was refreshing and the tone in which it was written worked surprisingly well. Dinah’s life and journey is heartbreaking, devastating, and i couldn’t help but root for her. the only thing i disliked was the amount of characters, but when you’re retelling a story you don’t have a choice in who the characters are, so no fault to the author. i personally thought it was a really compelling story, even if you aren’t familiar with the Bible or these particular stories. it was a story based in women, and for that i loved it.
