Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur

Milk and Honey is the debut poetry collection by Rupi Kaur which centres around themes of violence, abuse, love, loss and femininity. It is split into 4 sections which are:

-the hurting
-the loving
-the breaking
-the healing (the best)

I think this is a great introduction to poetry and a safe starting point for those wanting to start reading poems. Kaur had some nice eloquent lines throughout specifically in the last section.

Ultimately the poems within this collection are too basic and plain and feel like Kaur has just re-used popular quotes that people say.
For example a whole poem about “you don’t NEED a man, you WANT a man”. I feel like I’ve heard thousands of people say things like this so it’s here where Kaurs writings feels redundant.

The structure of the poetry confused me further as it doesn’t read like poetry. It reads like normal sentences with no analysis required, and this was my biggest issue. The beauty of poetry is analysing the writers meanings, however Kaur leaves nothing to the imagination. What you read is what you get and there are no further meanings to the vapid sentences.

In short, it just doesn’t feel like poetry to me, and I found it to be far to simplistic to be able enjoy.
