Growing up, I think we all have characters from storybooks that we identify with, don't we? Shy, bookish, know-it-all me with her head half in the clouds and half with the fairies was Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood, but I also had a special place for Sara Crewe. When I first read A Little Princess as a child, I saw myself in her: I was a Sarah (not a Sara) who lived near a place called Crewe; I loved to pretend; I devoured books like a little wolf; I had strange green eyes; I had a doll called Emily, just like Sara; I even pretended that I was a princess sometimes in order to stop myself from getting angry or upset. Sometimes, I still do!
On my umpteenth re-read, A Little Princess was just as charming and just as magical as I remember. It was made especially lovely by the fact that I managed to snag my beautifully illustrated copy on eBay, in the most perfect condition! Tasha Tudor's work makes this little book a dream, and I might be in my twenties, but I don't think I—or anyone else—will ever get too old for this fairytale.
