Reckless by Lauren Roberts

♡ I loved Powerless, so I had high expectations for this book... and unfortunately it just didn't hit the mark for me. I'm reviewing this with the expectation of reading a romantasy-not a romance, so please keep that in mind. If it was just a romance book then the rating would be higher... but it's a romantasy and I felt that there were very little fantasy elements in this book compared to the first one.
♡ I got a bit frustrated reading, because I kept waiting for something to happen or for there to be a plot... and there wasn't really a plot. This honestly had the vibes of a novella but was written as a full book that just stayed in a limbo of nothing happening but them constantly fighting and evading enemies and those situations were quickly resolvable- for example. It didn't feel like there was an actual plot, like no rising action, no climax, no falling action, and no resolution. I will say that there was a small plot twist that aided in the overall storytelling from the first book () but it didn't feel very relevant to the storyline of this book.
♡ another issue I had was that this book primarily focused only on Kai and Pae. We rarely saw the other characters from the first book. I was so excited to see Finn, Lenny, and Leonna... only for them to disappear a chapter or two later. We saw very little of Kitt- and when we did, it was personally a bit hard to follow what was happening because the chapters were so vague. Jax only showed up for literally a few sentences. Like, c'monnn I loved these characters from the first book and we barely got to see them- which is why I think this had more of a novella vibe.
♡ things I loved/enjoyed: Kai's character development in growing as a person and learning more about the plague, which helped him change his morals/beliefs, was written really well and I enjoyed reading from his pov. The trope of "he falls first and harder" was written so well. I really enjoyed Pae and Kai's relationship development, towards the end in the field was such a cute scene. The writing itself was so much better in this book, I got through this in one sitting. The ending was such a crazy plot twist- and I love a good plot twist. I only wished that it continued a bit more but ya know, cliffhangers are like that LOL.
♡ this is just my personal opinion, and if you loved this book- then I love that for you! I am still very much planning on reading the next book and am very excited to continue this series! Overall rating: 3.5 ★

when Kai & Pae got abducted by that one sketchy dude, I went 'oh finally, here's where the plot comes in. They have to work together to escape this dude', only for it to get resolved so quickly and they literally escape the next chapter and we never see that sketchy dude again (who I thought would've had more of a role in the storyline)Spoiler
