The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

5.0

Neil Gaiman is undoubtedly my favorite author, and this book is a gentle, whimsical testament to the strangely comforting macabre of his style. Here, we find a young child (Nobody Owens) who, like in the best myths, is special. He travels the hazy region between both the living and dead. There's a peacefulness here, a love about and for the Graveyard. The dead are charming, loving, and... just people who have lived their own little interesting lives before settling to permanent residence in the quaint Graveyard. Bod learns from them, loves them, and eventually, grows up and defends them and the Graveyard that has shaped who he is.

Gaiman was inspired to write this book when he saw his own toddler tricycling around a graveyard, and then he realized... he needed to be a parent longer to properly write this book. That's that kind of gentle and knowing perspective that envelops this book and makes it such a unique and nostalgic experience to read.
