Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

5.0

This was one of the best books I've read in recent years. I found the plot immersive and the characters engaging. I loved how it felt like I was simultaneously exploring both the past and the future. And what a bleak outlook for a future it is. Bleak, yet fearfully realistic. The planet is dying; corporations rule both the real and virtual worlds with seemingly uncontested power. As Midnight Oil would sing, the rich get richer and the poor get the picture. I loved considering Cline's overwhelmingly resounding message: we need to know how to switch off and engage with each other in real life. And we need to take action to look after ourselves and our planet. But there is always hope.
