The Windup Girl
by Paolo Bacigalupi
Paolo Bacigalupi introduced his female character via an extremely exploitative graphic rape. I stopped reading right there. I'm really fucking tired of rape as backstory or character development for women in fiction written by men. Stop writing burtal rapes as an easy way to make your sci-fi would seems darker and edgier. Fuck this book. This is why I no longer read many sci-fi books written by male authors. They are notoriously irresponsible with sexual violence. It's a pervasive problem in the genre and happens in every other novel I try to read that's written by men. Its almost never actual about women dealing with the phycological or emotional ramifications of sexual violence or about the long process of healing. Instead it's always just favoring for gritty dystopian sci-fi universe. So fuck that and any male writer that exploits rape in their story can burn in hell.
