Chickenhare Volume 1: The House Of Klaus by Chris Grine

4.0

I'm not quite sure what to do with this book.
Maybe it's because I'm particularly sensitive to violence against animals? But this is all in good fun...

I initially grabbed it because I thought it would be a shoe-in for my booktalks to upper elementary students leading up to the summer reading program. It's got an eye-catching cover, a hooky premise, and full-color, action comic book appeal.
But, uh, in the first few pages, the (admittedly snarky) characters talk about torture, beating, and a guy who has a thing for stuffing animals. Fine for 6th graders, prolly, but a little grisly for 3rd graders.

It fits handily with other shiny kids GNs - the works of [a:Doug TenNapel|45687|Doug TenNapel|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1239071739p2/45687.jpg] (we shelve him in YA), my lovely [b:Zita the Spacegirl|8879121|Zita the Spacegirl (Zita the Spacegirl, #1)|Ben Hatke|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1388260704s/8879121.jpg|13754899], [b:Giants Beware|12159923|Giants Beware!|Jorge Aguirre|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1317068387s/12159923.jpg|17130936]... but the juvenile appearance (and shelving) combined with the black humor, narrows the audience a little too much for me to use in outreach.

I'll be hand-selling it like a mofo, though!
