Dark Artificer by Ember Holt
5.0
I have loved every book for different reasons and this one just continues the streak in my opinion. I loved this couple and what's cool that if they were real people, I know these would be my ride or die couple friends. I could see us all sitting in a room reading a book and Alyse and me misplacing books just slightly off to annoy Kazimir which means Alyse would be paying for it later (got to help out my girl get her fun times in). I could just relate a little to Alyse which is probably why I wanted to be her friend (the reading and fat shaming are very relatable to my life). This was a couple that BELONGED together, and I would be their ride or die friend helping them out.
Ember has an amazing way of writing characters that are strong on their own but know they will be just as strong if not stronger with their partners because their partners want to help them achieve all their goals even if it means taking someone's head. The MMCs love how strong, powerful and courageous their women are and let them also be the brats they are because they just love them for who they are. You can tell whole heartedly that these couples all belong with each other and it's amazing to hear how they will talk about their partners.
Some things I really liked in this book is that my heart swooned every time I read my dragon and my reaper. When every time Alyse's powers just keep growing and growing Kazimir would never be threatened by her power but instead turned on and proud of how capable she is. The sweet moments Kazimir would come up to make her happy when sometimes she would be suffering. An example is mind reading book passages to her because she is unable to read due to a lockdown. The creative ways they have spicy times together when they aren't allowed to touch. Hot damn these two were creative.
This book is technically a standalone in a series but in my opinion each book should be read in order because it really really enhances the story line and the experience. I have loved where the plot is going and can't wait for the next book. But I am a little sad because I know there are two more books in the series, and I don't think I will ever be ready to let these characters go. EVER.
Overall, I loved the plot, I loved the characters who had amazing spicy chemistry and emotional chemistry and while this part of the story is wrapped up a little it is an ongoing series, and I am dying for the next book.
This book is about Alyse who is stealing palace secrets to sell to try and bring disorder to her mother and other nobles and using the money she makes to help those suffering in the underbelly. These people whose emotions and thoughts she can hear make her aware of all who are suffering in her kingdom and all she wants to do is help them for as long as she can. Which won't be for long as her betrothed will soon be arriving to marry her and take her away from her home to a kingdom where she is alone. So, she wants to do as much good as she can while she can. The only real light in her life are the brief moments in the Archives/Library where she is surrounded by all the wonderful books and where she might run into the head scribe Kazimir. Kazimir who has a dark past as a slave is using his position in the palace to secretly track down the master who enslaved him as a child. However, as consumed as he is with his mission when he hears the gait of her walk, he is more consumed with the thoughts of the moments he can get with his princess. These moments are moments they both wait for.
However, they both have secret lives and one night those lives clash, and their secrets are revealed. Not just their secret lives but the feelings they have for one another. Once they learn what the other one is trying to achieve, they will work together trying to accomplish each other's missions no matter the danger not that Kazimir will let anything happen to his dragon for he is her reaper and will protect her at all costs else he will burn the kingdom to the ground.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
