The Mothers by Brit Bennett

3.0

I’m going to put it out there. The Vanishing Half seemed to have a lot more substance than this novel. That’s obviously not to say that this book is not as good - it’s a great read but in a different way.

Following Nadia and Luke as teens and through their adulthood, they fall for each other as Nadia tries to cope with the loss of her mother. They then fall apart, as Nadia comes to terms with a prospect of being a mother herself and decides against it.

What follows is how a big decision in your life can affect how you live out the rest of your life, and what it also means to have that Mother figure in your life.

What I enjoyed was the “omnipresent” voices in the beginning of each chapter which probably was the Mothers in the church, and the fact that despite what Nadia decided, there’s some real human feeling in her guilt.
