The Space Between
by Dete Meserve
I won a Goodreads Giveaway! Finally!
I would give this a solid 3.5 stars. Quick, enjoyable, somewhat predictable beach read with a dash of astronomy.
The Space Between follows Sarah Mayfield. As her career excels, her personal life hangs by a thread to the point where she doesn't immediately realize her husband is missing.
I love the premise of this book. For those of us that have been married a while, who have two career households, who have kids and carpools, all the whirlwind things of daily life, I could envision this happening. The days when you see your spouse, but don't really SEE them. The book captures this well, though the reflections of Sarah on the past and current state of her relationship might be a little too tidy. What can I say, I like my characters and their lives a bit unapologetically flawed.
The first part of this book works well. I enjoyed it and read it very quickly. I think things lose a little balance towards the middle/end of the book. I won't reveal any secrets here, but I knew exactly who the bad guy was when the twist was introduced. I read a lot of thriller/mysteries and this isn't uncommon. It gets harder and harder to come up with good twists without making a story implausible. It doesn't really bother me, as long as the story remains compelling and keeps me interested. While I continued to read the story, it did lose a little steam in the second half. Things were wrapped up a little too neatly.
Overall, it was a quick and enjoyable read. Great for the beach. And you might learn a little about astronomy along the way.
