Wow, this was stunning. This was a standout on the International Booker long list and I’m sad that it didn’t make the shortlist. Be warned that it is quite bleak and depressing, but the writing is spare and gorgeous. The way she pieces together this small, poverty-stricken town and its citizens through 13 interconnected stories was so well done.
