This book makes me want to be an eco anarchist but mostly, I just want to plant some sweetgrass and work in sustainability now.

It is a collection of essays that sometimes feels a bit too meandering and needs some more editing. Certain essays could have had a bigger impact if they were shifted around more and grouped better but maybe that's sort of the charm. It is all continuously interwoven like a braid of sweetgrass.

There are small details that get into the weeds I don't agree with such as tax credits for corporations doing reforestation. It is 10 years since it was first published and the texts cited are mostly from the 90's / early 2000's. Since then, climate change is becoming an even bigger issue and more decisive action is necessary.

The core message of treating other species and the land with personhood are excellent. The best parts are the personal anecdotes and myths, descriptions of a gift based economy rather than a windigo based one and, lessons on how and how much the land provides.

Get the milkweed hardcover edition. The woodblock print is beautiful and I genuinely feel the book has love and care in its design.

If you love the earth, the earth will love you more. If this book can help convince others of that then the path of soft green grass awaits us.
