The Old Man & The Sea by Ernest Hemingway

3.0

About three quarters of the way through - and I never do this - I flipped to the end to see how it turned out. I had to. I was so sad and anxious and I couldn’t keep going without knowing what I was in for. I sort of wanted to give up but stuck with it because I loved the old man’s optimism and his spirit and his Zen ways. Also I love the clean, no-frills prose that Hemingway is famous for, and the story arc was pretty perfect. But ultimately I was too miserable feeling sorry for the old man, and the fish for that matter, and the relentlessness of it all, to fully appreciate its message and deeper meaning.
