The Wilderwomen by Ruth Emmie Lang
5.0

In this book, you’re immediately immersed in the sisterhood and friendship of Zadie and Finn. They feel like two girls you’ve grown up with and known your whole life. Their portrayal is so emotional, in-depth, and lively that it jumps off the page and engages the reader wonderfully. It’s almost like magic.

I love the concept of the girls having special gifts in this book. Finn has moments of feeling ‘echoes’ of other people’s memories, and Zadie gets glimpses of the future with obscurity. It’s captivating! The suspense really begins to build around page 80, and I found myself not wanting to put the book down as the girls adventured and speculated. I really appreciated all the little details the author put together to really make this story come alive.

The tangle of relationships- forgiveness, love, loyalty, hurt- it’s so honest and realistic. The portrayal of perspective in this novel is also really strong, through the girl’s gifts and the unfolding of the plot. I found myself mesmerized with this story nearly every single page. It’s wild and wonderful, which met all of my expectations and more.

I highly recommend this for adults and YA lovers of Magic Realism, the blurred line between Fantasy and Contemporary Fiction. I truly believe this lovely story could sweep almost anyone off their feet.

Coming back to say: The more I think about this book the more I love it. Magical realism may also be my top favorite genre. It’s just so special!
