the only part of this I enjoyed was Goldstein's essay , even though that was just a re-explanation of Orwell's ussr speculative fantasy slop that was placed there because the reader is clearly an idiot.
yes, this was successful under the context of this as a seminal dystopian text. and i understand the impressive predictions Orwell made about modern technology. however, when this novel was the best voice against impending government restrictions on civil liberties, im convinced it was read and taught through a "communism bad" lens for (deeply british) capitalist bootlicking. it treats the working class as perpetually stupid subjects to rule, both through oligarchical oppression and through human/societal nature. i think it's a given why that's bad. i would love to discuss this more, hmu.
I was excited to understand the role of Winston's misogyny. this excitement died as I continued to read, and found it baked into Julia's character decisions, not just Winston's thoughts and actions. maybe this was a reflection of internalized misogyny? but that is being beyond generous
in sum, im glad i read it because i understand the cultural references. but there are infinitely better options sans the capitalist propaganda, misogyny, torture porn, and general overkill.
