Letters from the Dead by Sam Hurcom

4.0

A compelling sequel, even though not entirely as entertaining as the groundbreakingly well-done first part. The problem, so to speak, is the premise: Once you know > for certain < that supernatural forces are at play, it's difficult to buy this kind of story.

That said, Hurcom's fun, and Bexley's fun. I'm getting "Decius Caecilius Metellus" energy, here: In a field as notoriously overcrowded as historical (or in this case, "Victorian Gothic") mystery fiction, Hurcom manages to find his own voice. That is an achievement not to be underappreciated.

I'm up for five more of these, if Hurcom decides to write them. ...Though I'd welcome it if Hurcom looked more at Sherlock Holmes, and less at Flaxman Low, for the next installment.
