funny informative lighthearted

I've been meaning to read this for ages--I think I got it for free when I worked for Borders--and I'm glad I held on to it all these years. It emerged in surprising good shape during a recent move, and I finally stopped putting off reading it.
What a delight to read! Besides the fact that I actually enjoyed diagramming sentences in high school and college, I loved the way Florey wrote this nostalgic book about the practice. The book is warm and humorous, and it's chock-full of sentence diagrams, ranging from easy beginner-level ones to diagrams that fill entire pages, examples of complicated writing styles like those of Joyce or Proust. These sections were really fun to read. I loved that the last sentence of the book was diagrammed.
If you've never diagrammed a sentence in your life--or maybe never even heard of diagramming sentences--if you enjoy books about language and grammar, I bet you'll like this too.
