You dig a bit of a hole for yourself when you have a character tell your female protagonist “you don’t have to pay me for this favor, but I want you to try out this new condom that I designed.” 

The remainder of the story wasn’t able to dig out from that. 

Read “Project Hail Mary” though, it’s very good.
