The Gods of Men by Barbara Kloss
4.0

I believe this book was a finalist in the 2018 SPFBO's and it well deserves it's place. It hit all the right notes for me; a healer protagonist, interesting magic including necromancy (one of my personal favourites). There is also a romatic sub plot between our two M.C's and I really liked their chemistry together.

When Sable was a child, she discovered she had magic when she accidentally stops her baby sister's heart. She flees in horror at what she has done and ends up in The Wilds where she becomes a Healer. Jos is a Prince, sent by his brother to retrieve Sable to save his father. They both have their secrets so it was interesting watching them form a bond and waiting for the truth to come to light for both of them.

The characters felt fully fleshed out and nuanced and I found myself fully invested in them. Their struggles felt consistent and realistic in the context of the story. Sable is clever and resourceful and I really liked her. Jos is a great contrast to her as a warrior who fully believes in what he is doing in defense of his people's beliefs and country.

Kloss isn't afraid to put the characters through some dark moments and I really felt for them during these events. For me; this was the perfect blend of fantasy, adventure and a little bit of romance. I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes me in the sequels.
