This is my fourth SGJ book after the Indian Lake trilogy and I was excited to read something new from him.

The Good:

The main story was excellent and had moments of tension and raw emotion. I’ve not read a vampire book before but this was enjoyable and fresh spin on the lore of the mythical creatures and how they live.

Who are good and bad? Are perceptions important? These are questions this book had me thinking about and the book really gets you questioning whose story and side is ‘right’.

I love the lore around Indians, I need to read more around the culture as I find it so interesting. Again SGJ using his own heritage is so powerful and clearly he has a passion to weave it into his novels.

The story of Good Stab was the best part! A genuine tale of pain, suffering, hope and maybe even redemption.

The Less Good:

The 2012/13 plot felt tacked on and rushed both ends of the book. I had no love or interest for Etsy, which is a shame as his previous female lead, Jade is a top 10 character for me.

I predicted the final third around half way through reading, but still enjoyed the final act.

I’m no scholar but also no simpleton, but I found SGJ writing at points almost impossible to read due to the sheer amount of heavy and complex writing in parts. Really took me out of the book at points.

Overall:
A mixed bag book. I loved parts and found the Indian part of the story so fascinating. However, the book at parts was bogged down with complex writing and a present day plot that either needed more exploration or could have easily been taken out.

I will however try another Stephen Graham Jones book in the future.
