Queen of Shadows
by Sarah J. Maas
Queen of Shadows is a strong follow-up to Heir of Fire (my favorite book in this series so far). In this book, many of our long-standing questions are finally answered. Major plot points that were previously shrouded in mystery are now unveiled, which gave me a sense of accomplishment because I was able to see where we were going and why we were going there. In terms of plot, I would rate this book a solid 5 stars.
However...I did end up giving it 4 stars. One aspect that was both confusing and frustrating was the way the main character (or one of them, since there are multiple POVs in this book) would make decisions behind the scenes. As a reader, you are often left in the dark about these decisions until the other characters find out. Normally, I'd be okay with this if the author provided hints about what was happening, allowing for some speculation. But instead, it often felt abrupt, like, "I know exactly what I need to do," followed by a fade to black until the plan is revealed later, which led to some confusion.
Additionally, while I loved all the characters, navigating their various POVs was challenging. Each character was pursuing different goals and motivations, which made it difficult to keep track of everything. I often found myself going back and rereading sections to piece it all together. Though this did dampen the reading experience, it didn't take away from the plot and character development, which remained strong throughout.
Despite some narrative frustrations, the plot and character arcs have me hooked. I’m excited for the next book. I plan on doing the tandem read (which will likely take forever), and I hope to learn even more!
