Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

it is a little too moralising for my taste, and the writing style is a little too simple and straight forward. however, it is very comforting and i would have loved to read it as a child. it reminds me of 'vier zauberhafte schwestern' and maybe a little bit of enyd blyton.

the girls' parents' relationship seems so equal and loving and they talk about how they want to being up their daughters (among other things that they do not spprove of corporal punisjment) and decide together and i love it. the mother in particular is so warm. she tells the girls that she loves them and that she is proud, she is forgiving and loves them with their faults and wants them to do better for themselves, but gives them time and occasion to learn, to find out for themselves. i love how they all leave space for emotions and anger and sadness and express their love for each other regularly.
of course there are some old fashioned ideas, like wishing for them to find good husbands to care for them, but the mother also says she'd rather they be gay old maids than unhappily married. the religious aspect is sometimes a little tiring but to be expected and not as judgemental as it could be. they are, however more judgy and have a more close minded idea of what is right and wrong than i would like of course, but put into context it is outright astonishingly modern.
also laurie is such a good example of positive masculinity, he is funny and caring and gentle and he cries before jo and treats her as an equal. although it clearly is a product of its time, there really are many revolutionary points about it and i love it. also i see why jo is such a beloved character, she truly is great and in many aspects so modern
