The newly anointed Duke of Claringdon and war hero Derek Hunt has returned to London on the orders of Wellington, leaving behind a dying best friend and missing comrades on the continent. Before his departure, he promises his dying friend that he will marry his friend's long-time acquaintance: the demure, beautiful and proper Lady Cassandra. The Lady Cassandra, though, is not interested in his courtship, which her brash friend Lady Lucy Upton makes rudely clear.
Thus begins a battle of wits between Derek and Lucy. Sparks ensue, resulting in a frothy and delightful, though not wholly unique, Regency romance. Bowman nicely surrounds the two leads with an interesting assortment of characters who are likely to partake in their own entertaining romances as the series continues.
