all i knew before diving into this book was that it's about an elderly named Hubert Bird who attempts to make some new friends after receiving the news of his daughter's future visit, but a few chapters in, i knew that it was going to be more than that. there are discussions on racism, grief, depression, and of course, loneliness, that are absolutely needed and were done in such a beautiful way. not to forget, the absolute banger of a plot twist that i did not think was coming AT ALL. it really put into perspective the small things that were said and/ or done by Hubert, and it was such a revelation that made me bawl my eyes out.

this book was phenomenal, and i sobbed throughout the quarter end of it. this was not just about an old man searching for friends, it was about acceptance that life is full of its ups and downs, and the realisation that you're not exactly alone in this world after all.
