This is a great space opera with very grating characters. I especially did not care for Jim, who we're told has this great moral compass and always does the right thing, when half the time I'm yelling at him because he's actually being an idiot. (Minor spoiler)
And then the only actual female character decides to get with him because.... idk. Because there has to be a romance I guess.

It's too bad because the main plot and political intrigue were interesting and I would like to see where it goes from here, but I don't know if I can make myself read more of the series because I really don't like some of these characters (and some of their attitudes about women border on questionable and aren't really challenged by the narrative).
The pacing was also a bit off, but this would have been forgivable if I'd had no other complaints.
You might not care as much about this and just want a good space opera with political intrigue. If that's you, you could still give this book a try and decide for yourself.
