The Midnight Orchestra by Jessica Khoury
3.5
The plot thickens, but it was a little too angsty for my liking, if I have to be honest.
Of course, I now understand Mia's reason for bullying Amelia and keeping Darby away, but it was a lot to take in—especially before it was revealed Mia's mom was being held hostage. I was really hoping that the Amelia Joneses would work together much earlier than it actually happened.
However, I completely knew that Mr. Midnight was Amelia's dad. As soon as I saw him, I just knew. Obviously, Mr. Midnight wouldn't be a random dude that hasn't been introduced before. Dunno. It just made sense. I was a little less sure when we learned the whole backstory of the orchestra (zombies and all), but nah. I was right!
Furthermore, I assume there is going to be a third book, purely because Amelia's dad vanished, and Amelia herself questioned why the Midnight Orchestra dates back way before her dad. To be honest, the latter plot point could be explained by saying "Mr. Midnight isn't a person, it's a title that gets handed down". Like, Eric's "bad" family are the previous Mr. Mightnights, and Eric kinda didn't want to, but eventually took up the mantle when Susie died to try to get her back.
Here's hoping the third one (if there is a third one) won't have too many friendship troubles.
