Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan
4.0
4.5 stars / 5. I've given the other books I've read by David Levithan 4's. I haven't given one a 5-star rating, but this is what has come closest.
I really like David Levithan. It is undeniable that his writing style is unique, charming, and can really evoke emotion. He has rightfully earned his place in the upper echelons of queer YA authors, and his influence on the genre is so apparent.
Two Boys Kissing is my favorite of his. It told the stories of multiple gay teenagers -- they were often heartwarming, often heartbreaking, but ultimately -- they were all hopeful.
The Greek chorus narration style took a moment to get used to, and I understand why not everyone will appreciate it. However, I thought it worked well, and felt that most of the novel's emotion came from that ingrained sense of empathy and experience being imparted on a younger generation. I didn't find it overly preachy, and I found it quite meaningful.
This is a quick read, but it packs a punch. It made me cry on several occasions, and that is always the mark of a great novel to me.
