Better than the second one.  Still a bit clunky emotionally--the last third of the book brought up things that I think we were supposed to realize the heroes were struggling with all along but that wasn't always terribly clear--but I love these kiddos and there is pain and suffering and courage and redemption, and you can't really go wrong when those things are done right.
