A Season of Spells by Sylvia Izzo Hunter
4.0

Better than the second book in the series but not as good as the first. Sorry, but I'm over Sophie and Gray and their World's Best Love which allows them to check on each from hundreds of miles away. I still like Gray a lot, but Sophie is more annoying than anything else. So powerful! And the King's favorite child! Everyone pales next to Sophie!

The most interesting couple in this book was Roland and Lucia, who are about to enter a political marriage.

There is one wonderful moment where two mage-lieutenants and Gray, all of whom can turn into owls, HAVE turned into owls and are getting a military briefing while looking at a map. Great image! In fact, everything about the owl lieutenants and their time with Gray was my favorite part of this book.

There is a same sex couple who mostly seem to be in the book so the author and/or publisher can say "Look! This book is diverse because we have two women in love with each other!" But I'm not gay so maybe others will see them differently.

I do recommend the series for those who like alternate history magic, Oxford, and people who can transform into owls.
