Millie is very open about the fact that she used a ghostwriter, but it’s still a weird concept to me. I will say, it felt like a young non-writer wrote it. It was very elementary and juvenile to me. 😬 It just didn’t hit the mark for me. WW2 historical fiction is such a saturated genre that I feel a book really needs to be excellent to stand out in that world, this book doesn’t compete in my opinion. However, I hadn’t heard of the Bethnal Green Tube Disaster that happened in 1943. Heartbreaking and tragic, but you can Google it and learn about it that way.
One other thing, I don’t know if Millie is intentionally making it seem like this is the story of her grandmother but that was definitely how I understood it, so I was a bit let down to discover after reading it all that it isn’t her grandmother’s story. The characters were fictional against the backdrop of this real tragedy.
