I like this series, but as often happens when a series goes on and on, the typical characteristics start to get old. This is the 12th book in the series; by now, it seems to me, the characters ought all to understand that Gamache is a genius--way smarter than they are and at least three steps ahead of whatever they think he's up to. Hence, there should be no grounds for hysterical fears and accusations that he has been up to some evil wrongdoing. Nevertheless: Penny can do endings, and the ending of this one is spectacular. I would have given it a 3 without the ending.
