Bunny is the offspring of The Secret History and Mean Girls.
It is quirky, violent, and horrifying. Awad is very sure of the aesthetic of the book. I enjoyed the jibes at different cliques in a creative writing program. The book is funny in those instances.
But Bunny fell short for me in terms of fleshing out Samantha's character. She occupies so much of the book yet there is so much distance from the reader. It could be the classic case of depicting such a character in a withheld manner as to get her stunted introverted nature across. However, it ultimately veers off the reader. So when the last chapter rolls around, you are not quite sure why you should root for her.
