This definitely reads as the first book of a trilogy. It's interesting, keeps you hooked, and is heavy on the world-building. The characters, however, have not yet had a chance to grow significantly, though the last hundred pages or so really set up the stage for significant growth in the following books. That said, you do get strong insights as to their current personalities, ideals, and values and I love this book.
