About Last Knight by Michaela Cole

Thoughts while reading:
-where’s the restaurant manager when Dacen is getting bullied?
-I must have missed something, because I thought Noah was the one for Ryne be jealous of, not Jeremy. I kind of missed where Jeremy came in, suddenly Ryne was just talking about him, but Dacen hasn’t, at least as of 26% in.
-a high school student giving a pet as a gift? Seems a bit much
-kind of surprised how sexuality is so accepted in a Georgian high school and how many guys seem not straight and open about it.

-it’s like they are fully grown adults. They’re 17, but fully ripped, both have tattoos (or maybe that was a mistake written and it was just one, Dacen has nipple piercings and a Prince Albert piercing because his parents gave him permission, but they’re both virgins. It’s like the idealized combination of qualities in young adults and adulthood- and it’s not working for me. Their internal dialogue is also a very mature adult.
For example:
“Anticipation vibrates through my body and suddenly I’m not just walking toward my truck, I’m walking toward the elephant in the room that’s been tap dancing around Dacen and me for the last week. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited about it.”
And:
“One hand runs along Dacen’s neck. His pulse flutters rapidly beneath my fingers. My other hand snakes down to the hem of his grey shirt, tugging on it, and then wraps around his side. A sense of rightness pours through my body in staggering waves, hitting me hard and nearly knocking me over on my ass. Dacen inhales shakily like his body is experiencing the same shock. My hand moves beneath his shirt, and I bite back a groan as my palm settles against his smooth, warm skin. This simple connection is electrifying. And it’s like this every time we touch.”
Dacen actually says this:
“The first time you got all up in my face and gave me one of your intense stares to try to scare me away, it had the opposite effect. I was hypnotized, not by the anger, but from the flash of desire that burned brightly behind it. So yes, Ryne, your eyes are pretty damn loud even when you’re silent. They speak your truth, regardless of what you do or don’t say out loud.”
Good writing, sure, but a high schooler 1st person POV, definitely not.

-I really disliked Ryne’s friends (minus Tyler, he seemed cool), but Roman and Evan seemed liked thugs for 90% of the book, and even then, there wasn’t anything to redeem them
-Ryne was a complete jerk most of the book too and sure, he has his reasons and he’s been hurt in the past, but that’s no excuse to be a complete a$$hole to Dacen. I really thought Dacen could have done much better. Ryne didn’t want to hurt Dacen, yet he did over and over and over and over again. No one should allow themselves to be treated so poorly and the hot/cold mixed signals were overboard. Juxtapose that with his flowery, syrupy “I love you’s” at the end and it just didn’t fit.
-what a lame attempt to win Dacen back, and that worked? Having his bud’s all put in a good word for him? How about he grovel and do all the work himself? How did that conversation go with Tyler, something like: I want Dacen back, will you say something nice about me?
-oh yes, fondle me in the middle of the high school hallway after we were just caught - stellar move

Technically this was fine, I just disliked Ryne a bunch as well as his friends and it felt so looooooong. I was pretty bored and had to push through to finish it; why did I bother - not sure.

Maybe 2.5 stars
