So what would happen if you alienated your humanity as a coping mechanism when you were young and as an adult the trauma just followed you in the form of you not being able to perceive reality in an accurate way?

You’d start a three party alien club/cult and end up committing inhuman acts (such (and not limited to) as: cannibalism, murder, incest and just… delusion).

The way Sayaka Murata builds this fever dream up is sort of like a ferrari:  from 0-100 in 10 seconds (I have no idea if that’s accurate). During the first 3 chapters you kind of empathize with Yuu and Natsuki. They both are extremely traumatized children that coped in the way they could, their only mistake was finding each other comforting. In the end they were children that didn’t really know better.

Once you hit the 4th chapter you start to see that these delusions and coping mechanisms are dangerous once they become adults, and by the time they all run away together you just know things are just gonna get disgustingly bizarre. I don’t want to spoil anything but omg I wasn’t expecting this to be that gruesome.

Overall, I think there is certain quality to how Sayaka Murata shows how easy it is to align humanity from acts and how violent things can get if they’re seen without any nuance.
