Overall I really enjoyed this book, more than the first book I read by David Bell, actually. The story was compelling, I don't think the blurb set it up to be quite what it was actually about.
Really it is a book about how we color the past to look the way we want it to. Nick sees a woman in a store who looks exactly like his college girlfriend. The only problem is that is college girlfriend is deceased. Or is she? Nick has never really gotten over Marissa. He lives as a bachelor. He dates women, but frankly doesn't treat them as well as he should. He compares everyone to Marissa. He is heartbroken but in love, a terrible way to be. And Marissa's untimely death makes it even harder for him to move on.
The girl in the store looks so much like Marissa.. but then she turns up dead as well. How is this possible? And why does she have Nick's address and name in her pocket on a piece of paper? Given his torch for Marissa, Nick cannot let this connection go. He begins to look back into Marissa's death and the events leading up to it. Why did Marissa break up with him? How does this girl look so much like her?
From there the back story between the main character and his deceased girlfriend from college unfolds, and you learn more about it and their relationship. I enjoyed it! It was a fun read, but not ground breaking in any way. I didn't really think about it much after finishing it.
There are several parts where it is impossible to like the main character, as happened in the other book I read by this author. I don't particularly care much about him, but the story was intriguing. The concept of a lost love--a break up and a death--is easy to relate to. Overall, a fun and quick read!
