The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 1: The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen

5.0

I've been meaning to check this series out since it started, but I finally got the first trade as part of the Humble Music Books Bundle last week and my only regret is that I waited this long. It's basically just what the description says, gods as pop stars, but with a bonus murder mystery and actual variety in the gods represented: those I remember being named so far are Susanoo (for an admittedly brief appearance), Amaterasu, Lucifer, Sakhmet, Baal Hadad (as opposed to other Baals), Baphomet (who is rightly separate from Lucifer), the Morrigan (with additional aspects Badb and Gentle Annie), Inanna, Minerva, Ananke, and a yet-unidentified Tara. There's also assorted LGBT representation, some better-than-average racial diversity, and a sizable female cast if those are things you're interested in.

The main draw for me, though, honestly, is that I love the way Kieron Gillen writes. His Journey Into Mystery and Young Avengers runs had already won me over; I still can't put my finger on exactly why I love his writing so much, but there's something kind of aware and almost magical about it that leaves me feeling inspired, so I love it.

TL;DR it's lots of fun, especially if you're already a Gillen fan, so grab a copy and check it out.
