Honestly I really struggled to get through this third book in the series, which I found really surprising given how much I loved the first two. The writing style seemed a bit different in this book somehow, and I really struggled to read the sections which were very, very graphic regarding self harm. It’s not usually something that bothers me in terms of triggers or anything but honestly it just seemed excessive and unnecessary .
I think I also struggled with how unrealistic the relationship came across for me. Not only withAlano’s sudden revelation of his hyperthymesia (which almost became a little supernatural at times), but also the ridiculousness of the amount of times things were miscommunicated yet forgiven so easily . It felt so extreme to me and I just didn’t get on with being immersed in the story because of it.
I enjoyed learning more about parts of the death cast universe, despitenever having any kind of ‘big reveal’ of the secret which was so heavily discussed and hinted at throughout. I understand it’s meant to be a huge secret, but leaving that as an unanswered cliffhanger and keeping the secret from the reader despite Alano fully understanding it was just frustrating . I think I also found the feature of so many characters from book 1 and 2 a little forced, and again, unnaturally squeezed in, which took away my enjoyment.
It was a pretty disappointing follow-up to books 1 and 2 unfortunately. I’m sure some people loved it but really just not for me. I may or may not come back to the series if more books are released but I won’t be heartbroken if that doesn’t happen.
