Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West

5.0

I love the Shrill show and have been meaning to get my hands on the original book. Yes, it is as hilarious and hard-hitting as one can imagine. This is a tough read, but West applies humor to the horror at every turn. It's unfathomable how she does it, but she succeeds.

I love the way she so exquisitely puts into words exactly what plus-sized people think, feel, and have to contend with from this idiotic world on a daily basis. Most of all, I love the confidence that she has in herself and the life she's so successfully written for herself.

This is a feel-good story for the most part, and it's even better because she's a real person. There's so much to love about that aspect of the book.

My only criticism of this book is that it's too short. I wanted it to go on longer. I wanted more of her insight into how pop culture shapes our understanding of bodies. I could read more of her written pieces, but there was just something about the rhythm of her writing in this book that made me wish it was a full-on manifesto.

Suffice to say, I highly recommend this book. Pick it up!
