Torment: Part Two
by Dylan Page
Again, trigger warnings are fiercely real.
I devoured both of these books. It is no joke how dark this theme is. It is not for everyone.
This book picks up as Mina grieves and heals. Then, running to hide a secret from Shay to protect Keenan and their connection through the years. I had rooted for Keenan and Mina. I loved their little connection, but my heart hated and rooted for Shay, too.
We watch through this book as Mina is bullied heavily at school and controlled even heavier at home by Shay. They connection changed drastically, and it moves from step brother to step sister to lovers. The non consent left me feeling a strong sort of way about Shay. I plotted his demise in my head and cheered harder for Keenan.
But Shay had a secret, too. A dark secret. And he would stop at nothing to protect it in order to have Mina. We see Shay more deeply integrated into the club but also working with an external party with the club. He's working more, and slowly, we see things unravel ever so slightly.
Shay pushes James out of her life. She was always monitored by his friends under the notion of protecting her from those who attacked her and killed her mom.
When everything began to collide, I was ready, but man, I wasn't either.
Books have made me cry before but never like this. I bawled and was nauseated. I had guessed his secret long before. There were hints throughout. But I wasn't ready at all.
Mina's realization that Shay had been the person who took her mom from her was so hurtful for her. The amount of betrayal that oozed from Mina hurt me, too. I wanted retribution for her.
But Mina's ability to love even demanded that she love him even knowing that. She had every reason to loathe Shay. To hate him. And sometimes she really did. Mina manipulated him in ways he didn't know and never would. She did what she could to live and protect people. It was toxic. But she genuinely loved him. It was both beautiful and sad.
when I realized that Shay was going to die as his secret caught up to him, and he realized he couldn't run anymore - we watch him show us that even though he did terrible things and he was selfish with Mina...when it came down to it...he put Mina and what she needed first.
He let her go so that no one could hurt her. The goodbye between Mina and Shay utterly gutted me. I cried so much. I was so invested. Feeling his struggle and his thoughts in the end, I truly appreciated the author. Shay returned where they first met. As he watched her slip from him, Shay walked to the playground as mental illusions of the 7 year old Mina soothed him. He knew choosing death on his terms would be the only way he could ensure her safety. Otherwise, he would be tortured until he gave the information. Shay refused to risk it. His final act was loving her, protecting her.
The epilogue shows us Mina, Keenan, and a little boy with eyes like Shay visiting a grave. Shay's grave. Mina, even in death, loved him and couldn't let him go. But she had a piece of him with her.
This book - Mina and Shay...Shay, especially live rent-free in my mind. I haven't been able to stop thinking of them.
That is a sign of a great book. I had so many reasons to hate Shay. And I did in so many ways. But I also loved him and wished he got the HEA with Mina. After everything, I wanted that. His redemption was incredible.
