A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

3.0

So . . . yes. After a month of positively sludging through A Deadly Education, I got through it.
This is a perfect example of right book, wrong time. Did I think the concept of a dark wizard academy filled to the brim with monsters was fantastic? Yes. Did I struggle keeping my eyes open as I was reading it? Also yes. A combination of a new job and a large workload for school made me nearly physically unable to finish this book.
It could have also been the book itself that was the source of my issues - I don't even know anymore. On the plus side, the vibes were immaculate, and the relationship between Orion and El was everything. But there was just way too much infodumping and, as other reviewers have pointed out, the magic system is poorly explained.
This book has put me in a reading slump, and now my plan to read fall books has gone down the drain. I may have to quit reading for the next month or so? We'll see.
