Tam Lin by Pamela Dean

All in all, I'm just torn. I couldn't put this book down, but i found it difficult and maddening. The pacing of this book has some serious problems: Janet spends the first third of the book with someone else and a good chunk is spent on her freshman year even though the excitement doesn't start until her senior year. Although it was well written, Dean and the publisher could have used a much better copyeditor.
The characters were unbelievably pretentious; I love literature and writing but the quoting and speaking was inexplicable until the very end. I really wished that the mystery surrounding the "actors" and the ghost developed along with the rest of the plot instead of getting thrown at us at the end. I also wanted Dean to develop the fairy tale more than she did. This could have easily worked as a short story considering that the fairy tale didn't work in until the end. This book could have been soooo much better.
