The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
1.0

This was dreadful.

I absolutely detest novels where I’m supposed to feel sorry for stupid characters who cause all their own problems. Young Werther is one of those characters who you just want to slap right across the face. I couldn’t stand the pathetic little weed. If I felt sorry for anybody, it was Wilhelm for having to read so many tiresome letters from this insipid moron.

To summarise:
1. Pathetic weed falls in love with the first pretty girl who will dance with him
2. He proceeds to stalk this woman after learning that she is engaged, and therefore not interested in him
3. He torments himself until
Spoilerhe blows his brains out - and he couldn't even do that properly. It takes him 12 hours to die

The first literary incel and stalker? Perhaps. Great tragic novel? Absolutely not.
