Valiant or Virtuous? Gender Bias in Bible Translation by Suzanne McCarthy

5.0

Suzanne McCarthy was a genius, and I flatter myself that we could have been kindred spirits. This book was published posthumously after McCarthy died from breast cancer; it was during treatment for her disease that McCarthy organized her research, made a publishing deal, and wrote the content of her book with the urgency of someone that needed to leave her message for the world loud and clear before she left.

Along with her urgency, her poeticism, and her passion, McCarthy brought a level of academic authority and undeniable competence. She tackles issues in gender bias that demonstrate an expert understanding of the way language works, the nature of semantic and grammatical gendered categories, and a broad comprehension of the history of the church as it relates to textual transmission and reception.

If you want to understand the hidden politics of gendered interpretation of Biblical texts, especially in the Protestant tradition, this is absolutely the best book you could read.
