For most of this, it was a 4 star read, but the fact they had teh sheer audacity to be as brutal as they were bumped it up. I honestly liked both main characters' perspectives and storylines. I kept expecting them to team up because their connection kept being mentioned (maybe next book?), but it makes sense and makes things more interesting to read a multiple POV book where people are on opposite sides of a war. This is heartbreaking, brutal, and purposeful. Everyone is a terrible person, but I love them because they are so interesting to be inside the head of. The intricate and complex relationships just hit, and the characters themselves are fleshed out so well.
Graphic: Child death, Misogyny, Sexual content, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Ableism, Blood, Death of parent, War
